Main Hall

The Main Hall is a nearly endless expanse of ornate corridors and halls, preserving the decor of an early twentieth-century luxury hotel. Mahogany-red and gold wallpaper covers the walls, while black walnut, white marble, and red-and-gold carpets alternate from corridor to corridor. Bookcases, cabinets, antique sofas, and candelabras are maintained far too perfectly, as though dust and stains cannot remain for long. Some candelabras are actually electric lights disguised as antiques, emitting a continuous hum into the silence. Room numbers on the gold plaques follow no order. Most guest rooms are empty, while a few are fully furnished as though they have always been waiting for occupants. Locked doors open or close by themselves without being touched, and old gramophones and speakers hidden inside the walls play jazz selected by no known listener. Party chatter, whispers from behind, and the sensation of a light tap on the shoulder often appear in empty corridors. Other records claim the faces in the wallpaper and old portraits turn their gaze to follow passersby.
