Sewers

The Sewers occupy lower, wetter utilities beneath the Abandoned Utility Halls. Brick arches and rough concrete enclose sewage channels of uneven width, while rusted grates, maintenance walkways, overflow gates, and abandoned pump rooms repeat along the current. Some walkways have already collapsed, leaving only broken railings suspended over the murky water. The heat has not faded with the flooding; steam and the smell of decay collect beneath the low ceiling, making the air as heavy as a boiler left sealed for years. Oil slicks, chemical foam, metal fragments, and fibers of uncertain origin drift through the channels, while the water level slowly rises without any record of rain or discharge. Pumps that have been without power for years sometimes shudder on their own, driving a surge of sewage through the deeper culverts before falling silent again, leaving only dripping water and the distant echo of something striking a grate. Old survey records claim those echoes sometimes approach against the current. Few who enter the culverts to verify them return; usually all that remains is a lamp caught in the ironwork and equipment warped by scalding water.
