Underground Mine

The underground mine lies beneath the city's streets and buildings, like an extraction complex that continues producing without workers. Concrete supports alternate with exposed rock, while drills, crushers, and conveyor belts run by themselves beneath dim yellow work lights. Stone travels along mine-cart rails and elevator shafts toward processing areas that cannot be seen. Deep passages join the city's drainage, power, and metro-maintenance structures, showing that this is not an isolated cavern but part of the Endless City's underground network. Closer to the upper levels, mineral dust gives way to the cold damp smell of a station, and narrow mining rails gradually become commuter tracks. Maintenance ladders, freight lifts, and collapsed ramps connect to equipment floors beneath abandoned platforms; vibrations from trains overhead shake loose gravel from gaps in the supports. No one knows when the machines began digging or why the stone never runs out. Records only note that mine carts which leave sight may reappear on another branch line.
